A Thought:

You must wait and listen for the sound of the genuine that is within you. When you hear it, that will be your voice and the Voice of God.
- Howard Thurman, American author, civil rights leader, and theologian (1899-1981)

Do we really take the Bible seriously?  Do we apply the concepts and ideas that are imbedded in the stories to our every day lives?  No doubt we have to take time to think about how these words will apply to our lives. We may say, "Not everything translates directly from those times directly into our world."  But many spiritual truths discovered through biblical characters actually still apply to our lives today.  One of those is the amazing Song of Mary (Luke 1:46-55) which she sang when she visited her cousin Elizabeth who was pregnant with John the Baptist, the forerunner of Jesus Christ.

Mary sings about how the all powerful loving God of the universe will take action for the poor and downtrodden, putting them back on their feet, giving food to the hungry, helping the helpless with tender care, and literally 'kicking out of office" those who abuse their positions of power by exploiting others.

Many of us like to celebrate the baby in the manger, but we forget that the baby grew up and became the One who brought us an understanding of how wonderfully loving and accepting God truly is, welcoming all persons into the community of God.  Jesus' ideas about inclusion were so radical that they got him into political and religious trouble and ended when those he openly opposed decided to kill him for his beliefs and actions.  But we all know, that wasn't the end of the story.  God resurrected Jesus to new life and God can and does resurrect you and me to new life in the here and now no matter how far down the social, economic, or religious ladder we feel we have fallen.

As we celebrate the baby in the manger this Christmas, remember that the baby grew up to be the One who wants us to know that God loves us and that God is working creatively in the world to bring justice, mercy, hope, peace, joy, and love to all who feel put down and left out...and that includes you and me.
